In lieu of our usual Monday night meeting, last night (Tuesday) several Shoreline members attended the Area Competitions hosted by the Christchurch Club at their Cashmere Club base. We were there to support our representatives: Adrienne Malis in the Humorous Speech Competition and Buck Buchanan in the Table Topics Competition.
Shoreline was also very ably represented by Helen Peate who chaired the Speech Competition, and Simon Mortimer, as a timer. The judges remain anonymous, so perhaps another of our members was there as a judge. I don’t know.
Adrienne and Buck performed without a hitch. Judging for the 5 entrants of the Humorous Speech must have been very close and, in the opinion of all the proud and totally unbiased Shoreline members present whom I canvased at the end of the meeting, Adrienne was unlucky not to have been placed. However, Buck’s confident, balanced and cultured contribution (about women’s suffrage) gained him a well-deserved first place in Table Topics and he will represent us at the Divisional Competitions in October.
The meeting room was packed. Thanks to all who attended and our hosts for organising the venue and supper.
